DRAGON QUEST®

JP > EN & EN > FR/IT/DE/ES Localisation

Our involvement with Japan's most popular game franchise stretches back more than fifteen years, to when our team were employed variously as in-house editors, freelance translators, and even game testers. Since that time, we have worked in one capacity or another on every main entry in the DRAGON QUEST® series, as well as multiple spin-off titles, on half a dozen platforms.

It was through working on these games that we learnt the importance of creativity, planning, consistency and attention to detail in localisation, from naming right through to recording—knowledge which has served us well in all of our subsequent endeavours. Having helped to define the style of this iconic series in the West, the DQ series holds a place very close to Shloc's collective heart.

Most recently, we worked on the JP>EN and EN>FR/IT/DE/ES localisation of DRAGON QUEST® XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age™, as well as its expanded Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch. From start to end of this sweeping adventure, our team had a ball building the huge and immersive world of Erdrea—whether we were lovingly crafting each line of the game’s immense script, or working closely with the voice cast to bring the game’s colourful characters to life. And while we were already proud enough of our work, we were hugely excited to learn that our Spanish team’s efforts had been recognised with an ATRAE Award for excellence in translation.

We feel truly honoured to have contributed to the legacy of this legendary series, and hope the adventure will continue for years to come. Long live DRAGON QUEST®!

ENGLISH

“We don't have a game of the year award for localization, but if we did, Dragon Quest 11 would win it…I couldn't stop thinking about how much work it took to make Dragon Quest 11 work in English, with every new accent and flair of personality I ran into. And this is an RPG you can put 80 hours into just following the critical path. There's an immense amount of text here that needed to be translated, and it's all done with such love and care.” – PC Gamer, Dragon Quest 11’s Localization is the Most Brilliant, Underappreciated Writing of the Year

“The text localization is excellent, with the most impressive collection of clever English puns I’ve ever encountered in a translated video game. A town where residents spoke in haiku was an especially impressive feat of creativity.” – IGN, Dragon Quest XI Review

“Rather more timeless, thankfully, is Dragon Quest VII's excellent writing. That's been a series staple for a long time, and this 3DS update knocks it out of the park, with a literary-lite tone that fits the epic world-building quest perfectly. It's equal parts wistful and whimsical, and we love it.” – Nintendo Life, Dragon Quest VII Review

FRENCH

“The sharpness of the script-writing is perfectly transposed thanks to the great localisation, which is both thorough and inspired.” – Game Blog, Dragon Quest VII

ITALIAN

“Special mention for the excellent Italian localisation—far better than what had been done in 2000 for the original English version.” – Spazio Games, Dragon Quest VII

GERMAN

“In particular, the excellent dialogue and charming characters have pulled me into the adventure . Each new island abounds with interesting stories , amusing characters and surprising moments and I often had to laugh because of the funny scenes .” – PC Games, Dragon Quest VII

SPANISH

“Dragon Quest VII’s localisation into Spanish is a superb job, with a fascinating attention to detail that encourages the player to chat with all the characters he finds, and to leave no stone unturned. Sincerely, it is worthy of praise.” – Game Reactor, Dragon Quest VII
